ThNR Report

Calling Giles’ bike stolen may have been premature.  Forgotten would have been more accurate.  Going to school, substitute teaching, a new job, selling and buying a house, 3 young kids and preparing to leave for holidays will do that to a guy.  Giles left his bike at school when he was a sub.  He found it 11 days later, leaning against the wall where he had put it.  Absent mindedness meets small town goodness.  Sometimes it works.

12 of us cycled around town and found that the puddles were turning to ice.  There were several close calls but we managed to make it back to the clubhouse unscathed.  Minutes include: Gavin shared how he proposed to Joanne during a job interview, March madness broken leg video, Giles uses sandpaper and bleach to cure poison ivy, the cross country ski crowd is enjoying their extended season, James shared his story about his perfect 180 bike slide, Steve limped in with a broken leg (don’t worry, his snowmobile is fine), Steven reminded me about the advertised sausage sticks which were promptly consumed while Giles showed his impressive/disturbing sausage skills, Whiteshell camping promises to be wicked-awesome, Tom suggested team ABES 2014 for Quiz Night, gravel road routes and grass track racing potential, small town good and evil, and Shaun showed us how he spills beer on himself.

Here are some very terrible pictures of good times...

Stolen Bike

Local pretty-boy, Giles Ringer reports that his bike was stolen while he was in T.O.  Keep your eyes peeled for an old, blue and white road bike that has a tendency to fall down.  The good news is that it won’t be at the bottom of the pond.  If we find out who took our brothers bike, we may have to deal out some old school country justice - or more likely some intense passive-aggressive shunning.

Help a brother out?

ABES Whiteshell weekend

Yes, you need to know.  The details.

June 7-9th the ABES have the group camping bay at Falcon Lake reserved.  That's Friday through Sunday boys.  So what do we have planned?  That's the beauty of it.  Whatever we want!  Plans can be discussed as the date approaches but book it off now.  Guaranteed fun.

Thursday Night Ride report (belated)

It was coolish.  But people (as always) showed up.  James, Duker, PK, Franklin, Shaun, special guest Ian Hall and myself (DS) managed to convene at HQ and after chatting and procrastinating, rode.  Out and back through the village then over to the Park to climb and descend and forgoe a knockdown on the ultra slick pond.  This is where my ride ended (Fuck you knee!) but the others headed North.  Curt T. passed me as I limped back to the clubhouse and apparently he caught up with them.  Back at Grumpy's the Duker rolled in (we'd lost him somewhere) and we sat down for some beverages.  The rest of the crew showed up sporadically over the next little while (including Lyle, fresh from the big foggy city) and we discussed (amongst other things):  the Sunflower Festival gravel/road race (the reason Ian graced us with his presence), music for said race (Andrew Neville and the Poor Choices)?, bike shops v. places that sell bikes, PK wants to hit children in airports, the ABES MTN Bike wknd and entry/inviation to the event, dinosaur tails = penis insertion (natch), getting the strap, Lorne Triska and possibly the finest Cougar/Older Bar Wench moniker of all time...High Mileage.  All in all a delightful evening.  We should try it again sometime.

James, the abominable cyclist

Commies Are Cool

If you want to support the cycling community but don't feel like racing, you could always take advantage of the Road Commissaire courses being offered FREE by the MCA.  Road Commissaires are the people at road and cyclocross races that make things official and legit.  There is a need for more of these fine people to make the races possible.  Former Official of the Year and MCI Stookie, Arlene Woodcock will share her know-how so that you too know how.  Check out the deets here.

ABES MTN Bike Weekend

It is set.  June 7-9th, 2013.  Mark your calendars.  Details will be discussed on Thursday.

ThNR Report

Low turnout last night.  Duke, James, Gavin, Steven and I rode around town.

Tom and David joined us at the clubhouse.  We reminisced about DB eating discarded chicken wing bones, the goodness of the AWBF, discussed gravel road ride possibilities, different types of Christians, Altona sex surveys, clubhouse nesw: arm wrestling is in - hula hooping is out, and rumour has it that Bruiser broke his leg while snowmobiling.  I cringe thinking about it.  Heal up Steve.

AWBF Report

23 cyclists met on a windy, cold, snowy day and had a blast riding bike.  Anytime you get a bunch of cool cyclist together, there is a high likelihood that good times will ensue.  Even though the weather was less than ideal (with a Weather Warning in effect), it was good to get together and ride bike.

We started off with a group ride that saw us noodle around town and slog/walk through drifts.  I liked cycling en masse with a bunch of friends.  It's fun to do, safer and a rare thing when so many parents can arrange childcare for the same afternoon.  I loved it.  We played some cage-match knockdown games where Gavin "the rhino", Curt and I won the temporary titles of World Champion of the World.

We made our way to the park where we paired up and had an hour long relay race.  We ran up the hill, raced and plowed our way out of the nature park, around the ball diamonds, then back across the glassy ice to the exchange.  Sandra C challenged us all by accidentally racing a lap in the wrong direction.  These things happen, more often to some perhaps.  Lyle and James intimidated their giant selves to victory beating out Gavin and Joanne.  Albert and Bruce took the bronze.

After the cycling was over, we fetched our chill'n and 42 of us met at the clubhouse spa for some splashy fun, Jets game (thanks Shaun) and potluck supper.  Draw prize winners were won by Lyle, Shaun, James, Julia and Joanne.  Steven finished off the evening by falling into the pool with his clothes on - funny guy.  Well done team.  JS

Sweet Cheryl Koop took these...

 Good times.

BAC Hearts The AWBF

Back Alley Cycle donated some shweet shwag for our wing-ding tomorrow.  Thank you boys.  I threw in some pepperoni sticks for good measure.  Prizes will be won on a draw basis.  Everybody gets a ticket.  Podium finishers of the relay race, knockdowns and slow race get extra tickets.  Everybody has a chance to win.  Don't forget your bathing suit, towel, potluck goody and drinks.  The vendor is open until 6.

ThNR Report

James, Shaun, DB, Steven, Chaz, David, Steven, Gavin, Albert and I met to bike around town.  The crew that gathered had the potential for a fast and furious ride; it was not.  We scoped out the park for race course possibilities and discussed our options.  I then made a tactical error by cycling too close to the clubhouse where the lure of beer, wings and the third period of the Jets game was too much for most, so we retired early.

Tom and Franklin joined us at the clubhouse where the Planning Committee Minutes included: the ABES Spring Ride, Operation Muerto, Altona KOM, The Knack Zote Gravel Grinder (or something like that), the ABES credit card, jersey font thoughts, overpacking for road trips, and David revealed his douche-baggary as our rogue blog-poster.  Good times.

Camping/biking/eating/living supplies add up.

The shitty weather may seem shitty but it's actually awesome.  Embrace winter y'all!  It's the adversity that can make these events memorable.    That, and winter is almost over and there will be a hot-tub.  I’ll see you funners on Sunday.  JS

It's that time again.
The ThNR will soon be upon us.
